Yesterday, the second official trailer for the upcoming Tomb Raider movie was released and fans all over the world got very excited about it. In case you missed it, watch it below now:

But what is the new Tomb Raider movie about? Here’s an official synopsis for you:

Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she finds herself on the island where her father disappeared.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, Tomb Raider is the story that will set a young and resolute Lara Croft on a path toward becoming a global hero. The film stars Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl) in the lead role, under the direction of Roar Uthaug (The Wave), with Oscar-winner Graham King (The Departed) producing under his GK Films banner. The film’s production begins on the heels of the 20th anniversary of the wildly popular videogame franchise from Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal.

Tomb Raider also stars Dominic West (Money Monster, 300), Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight, Django Unchained) and Daniel Wu (AMC¹s Into the Badlands).

Quick Trailer Analysis

The second trailer shows us quite a lot more of Lara’s adventure than the first did. It is well-known that the movie is based on the rebooted Tomb Raider games, especially on Tomb Raider 2013. It is an origin story, as Alicia Vikander said in an interview. In the trailer, several scenes from the 2013 video game can be spotted, for example when Lara Croft broke through the glass of a stranded plane hanging from a cliff. In the game, Lara manages to grab a parachute, open it while she is falling down and then experiencing a heavy ride through the forest and trees. This can also be seen in the latest trailer.

But it is not all about the 2013 game. In the first trailer, Alicia Vikander is shown wearing the classic, famous Lara Croft braid and sporting the legendary dual pistols. That trailer also shows us a scene of Alicia riding a bike, which reminds us of the Tomb Raider movies starring Angelina Jolie. It seems like the upcoming movie is trying to connect aspects of classic and reborn Lara and form an origin story both based on the rebooted games and what veteran fans love most about their classic Tomb Raider heroine.
